A sculptural tribute to Nelson Mandela by Michael Elion.
A sculpture with a difference, to honour late former President Nelson Mandela has been unveiled at the Sea Point promenade, Cape Town.
It is a giant set of stainless steel spectacles, anchored on the ground facing Robben Island. Artist Michael Elion says the artwork is dubbed “Perceiving Freedom”.
Elion says the spectacles symbolise a dialogue within the country by asking some pertinent questions.
“The question its asking is how did Nelson Mandela perceive the world, how did he perceive freedom and what does it mean for each of us to be truly free, so the glasses have clear lenses and those symbolise the invisible barriers and prejudices that we have in our own perceptions in the world, but Nelson Mandela was able to overcome those prejudices.” SABC News
