Mt Ruapehu rises from the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, located in the Dual World Heritage, Tongariro National Park.

In winter there are two skiing  areas – Whakapapa and Tūroa. Terrain is formed by solidified lava, making for some of the most exhilarating skiing and riding NZ has to offer.

In summer, it offers sightseeing aboard the 1.8km Sky Waka gondola, with views across the Central Plateau, and down to the unique volcanic terrain, dining at 2020m, and marked walks. -Wikipedia

I travelled to  New Zealand for the first time in 2007.  My friends live in Ohakune, a small town at the southern end of Tongariro National Park, close to the southwestern slopes of the active volcano Mount Ruapehu, in the North Island of New Zealand.
