Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #33: Nature

Communal nests in Namibia

Sociable Weavers are best known for their giant communal nests, the largest built by any bird, which can house 400 birds and last 100 years.

These are found in northern South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Over a hundred pairs can be found in one communal nest. Sometimes they grow so big the tree is damaged by the weight of the nest.

  1. I wish there was a button for “really really like”!!! These photos are fascinating to me, I have never seen anything like this, only vaguely heard about weaver birds. This post is one I want to keep!
