For this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge, please post a photo that is unusual in some way for you, whether it be through technique, by subject, or in some other unique way. This theme is wide open to interpretation because only you know what is unusual to you.
Yesterday we took a trip to Saint Helena Bay (Afrikaans: St. Helenabaai) , a settlement on the West Coast Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa.
Historically, Saint Helena Bay is the location where Vasco da Gama, first set foot in South Africa. The date of this event was recorded as November 7, 1497.
At this nursery we saw so many unusual plants!
Dioscorea elephantipes: Elelphant’s Foot or Hottentot Bread
Plant Type: herbaceous twining climber, succulent or tuber
Brain Cactus :This twisted cactus is small, but interesting. A small cultivar growing 10-15cm across. It will reach 10cm in around 2 years and 15cm in around 5 years. It is slow growing but lives a long time. The older it gets the less it should be watered. The green stems are covered in small, yellow spines. on the right hand side are two pots of the string of pearls plant.
Haworthia truncata var. truncata (Afrikaans : Perdetande) has a fleshy root system and is shallow-rooted so the plant can absorb every drop of moisture when it rains. It is a miniature leaf succulent with abruptly truncated leaves that are arranged opposite each other. This plant grows flat on the ground with the fleshy leaves just protruding above the soil surface.
Unusual, but very special and interesting. 🙂

I love the descriptive Afrikaans names, perdetande! Beslis.

Mooi keuse.

Ja, dis verseker! Daar was soveel verkillende soorte vetplante! Die omgewing is nog baie onbekend vir my! Was maar meestal ‘n Nataller!
