Common Names: Octopus Tree, Umbrella Tree, Ivy Palm, Schefflera
The Octopus Tree Schefflera actinophylla is an evergreen tree growing to 15 m tall. It has compound medium green leaves in groups of seven leaves. It is usually multi-trunked, and the masses of bright red flowers develop at the top of the tree. The Octopus Tree produces up to 1000 individual flowers generating large amounts of nectar which attracts nectar-eating birds and insects. The thousands of fruits produced each containing many seeds are eaten by many birds in particular by Black Collard Barbets and by monkeys, seed dispersal is predominantly carried out by birds.

I enjoyed your octopus tree post. When I was bored in the summer months at age 10, I once thought I would learn the name of every tree in the world. I started my own little report on trees, without any teacher direction. I did not get too far, but I have always loved trees. I have heard of schleffera house plants, so I wonder if this tree is related to them?

Thanks Carol. I found this on Google : Schefflera arboricola is a flowering plant in the family Araliaceae, native to Taiwan as well as Hainan. Its common name is dwarf umbrella tree, as it appears to be a smaller version of the umbrella tree.
